A successful RV trip starts with a safe driving experience. If you own a Class A motorhome, use the following tips to safely drive on the highway and on windy roads.
Highway Driving
While you’re on the highway, you’ll probably notice that your RV’s bigger size has a drawback: it acts like a sail catching the wind on the road. Whether it’s a sudden natural gust or the draft of a passing vehicle, your Class A motorhome can easily be pushed around. Because of this, keep an eye out for high wind warnings, as that will be a signal to you to get off the road.
Windy Roads
Turns in general are going to feel different, but you’ll want to be particularly careful on windy roads where there’s a bend every few minutes. One big way that Class A motorhomes differ from other vehicles is that their center of gravity is significantly higher than what you may be used to. If you take a turn too fast, you can easily tip over or at the very least find yourself in a scary situation.
When you’re approaching a bend, pay close attention to the suggested speed limit. You’ll want to reduce your speed to 5-10 mph below that in order to stay firmly planted. Driving a Class A motorhome isn’t about speed, it’s about making sure you and the other drivers on the road can safely continue their respective journeys.
